International Workshop:

New Frontiers in Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy
Angle-Resolved PhotoEmission Spectroscopy (ARPES) is the most direct method of studying the momentum dependent electronic structure of solids. In recent years, this technique has become one of the key tools in elucidating the connection between electronic, magnetic, and chemical structure of solids in particular in those complex systems which can not be appropriately described within the independent-particle picture. The availability of dedicated ARPES beamlines at state-of-the-art synchrotron facilities around the world will provide the scientific community with an invaluable tool in fundamental and industrial condensed matter research.

The ARPES2005 - New Frontiers Workshop is sponsored by the Canadian Light Source Inc. and the British Columbia Synchrotron Institute. This workshop will be held on April 29th and 30th, 2005 at the University of British Columbia in the Advanced Materials and Process Engineering Laboratory (AMPEL) Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Aims & Scope
The aim of this workshop is twofold. First, to explore the full potential of modern Angle-Resolved PhotoEmission Spectroscopy in studying the low-energy electronic structure of complex systems and nanostructured materials. The second goal is to bring together the community of experts in the field of novel quantum materials, at the national and international level, who would directly benefit from the development of a new state-of-the-art facility for Spin and Angle-resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy at the Canadian Light Source. This event will provide exciting discussion opportunities, and will help to identify the research directions and tools required to best serve the community.

The invited scientists will contribute expertise in synchrotron based spectroscopes with specific emphasis on spin and angle-resolved photoemission, in the synthesis/fabrication of novel quantum materials and nanostructures for which ARPES is an ideal characterization tool, as well as in the most advanced theoretical schemes developed to describe the electronic properties of complex many-body systems. The characteristics of the insertion device and of the ARPES dedicated end-station to be developed at the Canadian Light Source will also be discussed.

If you were invited or would like to give a presentation, please email to the title and abstract of your contribution as a Word or PDF document. Note the workshop character: the goal is to have ample time for discussion, thus the recommended contribution format is a 30 min. presentation plus 10 min. for discussion.
